Soapmaking Basics
Offered: March 4, 9:30am - 5:00pm
Location: Commonweal Garden
Instructor: Allysyn Kiplinger
In this hands-on, fully engaged class you will make five pounds of vegetarian soap from scratch, using the traditional cold process method and a special "zipper" recipe of coconut and California Olive Oil. This simple, but specially developed recipe is easily adaptable to your family's needs back at home. We have a treasure trove of tools, molds, toys, herbs, flowers, grains, books, and others soap samples to inspire your creativity and thus customize your work.
The class includes a discussion of chemistry, safety, recipe adaptations, French milling, glycerine soap, fillers, and superfatting. We will also focus on ecological and bioregional issues of home, small scale and local production for community health and vitality.
All participants will leave with the know-how to make their own soaps at home, as well as a 5-pound batch of hand-crafted soap to take home.
