Apprenticeship and Internship Opportunities
For those who are ready to pursue an even deeper level of immersion into the core routines and mentoring skills that embody the cultural basket of integral awareness training, there are a limited number of special apprentice and internship opportunities available.
The Apprenticeship Program is an intensive and focused immersion into tracking, nature awareness training and applied cultural mentoring. Apprentices are expected to pursue personal learning objectives and fieldwork both during and in-between classes. Apprentices also deepen their understanding of awareness training by facilitating group activities with the direct guidance and support of the Shikari Guild staff.
Learning opportunities include:
- Guidance and structured support for achieving personal learning goals, including biweekly email mentoring services with Shikari Guild Staff
- Shikari independent study assignments and Eight Shields naturalist evaluations
- Special monthly conference calls with Jon Young and Shikari Guild staff
- Training in wildlife inventory methodology, including: preservation and collection of track and sign, NatureMapping and Bioblitz events, report preparation and presentation skills
- Access to the Shikari Tracking Guild’s library of resources
- Meet and learn from wildlife professionals in a variety of fields, and develop the skills that lead towards professional abilities as a tracker
Apprentices also receive benefits such as discounts on Owlink Media learning products (including Kamana 1 and 2 materials, other books and audio materials!). Local servicing options for the Kamana and Shikari Independent Studies programs will also be available.
Applicants interested in apprenticeship must demonstrate their level of commitment and passion for learning by having accomplished the following prerequisites prior to the beginning of the Fall semester (or equivalent, as determined by Shikari Guild staff):
- Completion of Kamana Naturalist Training Program Levels 1 through field pack 2.3 or higher
- Completion of at least ten clear-print Shikari Orientation journals from ten different species of mammal
- At least one year of mentoring in an Eight Shields Cultural Mentoring program (includes programs such as the Integral Awareness program, the Institute of Nature Awareness, Wilderness Awareness School’s Residential Program, Vermont Wilderness School’s Apprenticeship program, Regenerative Design and Nature Awareness, and others)
- An entrance interview with the Shikari Guild staff
In addition to attending all 12 Saturday and concurrent Sunday classes, apprentices have a special opportunity to hone their awareness and mentoring skills through advanced trainings during each Sunday class. On Sunday mornings, apprentices will be guided to set up and facilitate learning stations in the field for the first-year Integral Awareness students and tracking club attendees. Program staff will observe and aid apprentices in applying effective mentoring techniques, as well as help to hone their field interpretation skills.
Apprentices are responsible for facilitating stations, with the guidance and support of the Shikari Guild staff. Along with further development of track, sign and naturalist skills, apprentices thus develop a crucial experiential understanding of the mentoring process in action. As the Apache elder Stalking Wolf understood, a skill cannot be completely comprehended until one takes on the responsibility of sharing it with another. Through the full circle of lesson preparation, facilitation, and analysis, the cycle of mentoring is deeply internalized and the seeds of understanding begin to root on a profound level.
On Sunday afternoons, apprentices will set-up and facilitate Eight Shields mentoring stations which test participants on every level of naturalist ability. This training helps all members of the community to prepare for upcoming Cybertracker evaluations and Eight-Shields naturalist certifications.
Apprentices also will join us for the three seasonal trips as we explore the ecology of several distinct California bioregions. Humboldt’s rich bear sign and diversity of Mustelid species, the mystery of the Mojave, and the amazing sands of Cuyama all await us . . .
Apprentices can propel their mentoring skills further through additional involvement in other community events:
- Facilitating tracking/awareness stations and group explorations at Institute of Nature Awareness Saturday gatherings at Cloverdale Ranch in Pescadero
- Invitation to join the Regenerative design and Nature Awareness classes for weekly Tuesday evening Cultural Mentoring discussions and Wednesday morning bird language sits & tracking (apprentices who choose to attend these sessions will help to facilitate group bird language sits and debriefs), as well as once-a-month all day for Thursday nature awareness days
- Opportunities for involvement with Bioblitz/NatureMapping events
As you can see, the Apprenticeship is a demanding and focused experience. Those who choose this path will come away with a rich, effective experience-base and an exposure to deeper levels of questioning that will continue to last for a lifetime.

Internship:
All of the above opportunities, responsibilities, and requirements apply to our interns. Interns are committed trackers, naturalists, and/or professionals in other fields, who take on the roles of communications, technician, caretaker, and team leader both in the field and out. Interns are in service to the program in a way that rises beyond the responsibilities of the apprentice. Internship positions require the highest level of professional service ethic. It can be a demanding job, but committed interns are an essential component in dynamic learning communities. The Internship opportunity is an amazing chance to hone professional skills, while walking with a determined commitment to peace, group unity, and the good message. It is very clear to us that integral awareness, as a powerful tool for building community awareness of the world that we live as a part of, will require the sort of diplomacy and ethic that can be effectively developed through the Internship position. This is an ancient and time-tested model that fosters highly aware, kindly, and helpful people. Intern responsibilities include...
