So What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is a practical set of ecological design principles and methods for human settlements which can be applied to urban, suburban and watershed scale. Permaculture principles provide a way of thinking that enables people to establish highly productive environments that provide for food, energy, shelter, and other material and non-material needs. These principals are rooted in careful observations of natural patterns and can be applied to all climates and a wide variety of cultures from indigenous to technological.

Recognizing the creative role that humans play in the cycles that support life, Bill Mollison and David Holmgren pioneered permaculture in the 1970s. As we move into the 21st century, tens of thousands of people around the planet now practice permaculture. The global permaculture community actively evolves through workshops, journals, books, web sites, design certification courses, and most importantly through personal experimentation. People inspired by this exploration manifest a vision of bounty and ecological balance in their gardens, homes, workplaces, and communities. If you wish to experience permaculture in action, join us at the Permaculture Institute for a garden tour, workshop, design course, or an overnight stay.
