Local Perspectives on GMO’s, Fair Trade, and the Struggle to Maintain Farmer Livelihoods
Friday, November 17, 2006, 7-9 pm
at Commonweal Garden in Bolinas

With agriculture and the food system in a clear state of crisis on a global scale, eaters and growers all over the world are looking for sustainable local solutions. Come learn from and share with small and mid-scale farmers who are organizing locally and globally to protect their livelihoods by building alternatives through fair trade and sustainable agriculture.

Those of you who have been to Commonweal Garden over the last three months may have already met Mr. Ubon Yuwa.  He is coordinator of the Alternative Agriculture Network in the Northeast of Thailand. He works directly with Thai farmers to promote sustainable agriculture, reduce use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, and prevent exploitation of farmers by governments, corporations, and trade regulations. He is currently the Southeast Asian representative to via campesinas, the international farmers’ movement, and has helped establish fair trade rice cooperatives.

Thanks to the work of ENGAGE  and Multinational Exchange for Sustainable Agriculture (MESA), Ubon has been able to spend the last three months in the United States, staying at Commonweal Garden and networking with various grass roots organizations.
